There’s a lot going on in this 1894 drawing by Dutch-Indonesian artist Jan Toorop: there are a whole lot of people drowning from mankind’s collective loss of faith, there are two famous Dutch writers (Willem Kloos and Lodewijk van Deyssel) who remain above the water, there are bayonets violently sticking up from the ground and there is a figure representing the soul flying in hopefully on a swan. It’s chaotic, unsettling – and really kind of cool.
