The prodigious American artist John Singleton Copley painted this artwork when he was just a teenager, at an age most of us were drawing that weird ‘S’ shape over and over in our notebooks. Inspired by Italian mythological paintings, the painting depicts Neptune and his companions among the waves, and showcases the artist’s deep connection to the sea.
