Dear Diary,

Deborah was really losing her mind about the musician we flew to New York with today. Now you know I never name names, so I'll just call him 'J'. I didn't really know why she was in such a fuss - it's not like we haven't had rock stars in the jet before. But when his limousine pulled up and he stepped out, Deborah got so flustered she dropped the jug of water she was holding and I had to help her mop it all up before J and his people got on board.

Okay, I must admit he made for a pretty hip picture. He moved in this very cool way, carrying a worn-out guitar case, and his outfit... so many colours! I wish I was brave enough to wear something that wild sometimes.

I was of course very professional as usual. I got J settled in his seat and offered him a drink and lit his cigarette, and he was very friendly - not like a rock star at all.

I do think Deborah could have been a little less friendly! After takeoff, she stood over him telling him all about parties she's been to and how his music speaks to her soul - whatever that means! I had to go up and ask her to assist me with the dinner service, which is not very professional at all.

When we landed in New York, she actually gave J the phone number of the hotel room we'll be staying in! I couldn't believe her nerve.

He did promise to call her though, and told us we should both watch him play guitar some time. Diary, I would only tell this to you, but I have to admit... the idea thrilled me a little.

Dear Diary,

I can hardly believe it, but J actually called our hotel room last night. Deborah spoke to him, and when she hung up, she jumped on my bed and squealed and told me that J was heading to some big music fair upstate, and said we should come and party with him backstage there.

She said she had it all figured out. We'd swap some shifts with a couple of the other girls and head to the property of some people Deborah knows - some sort of farm, I think, quite close to the fair. We could spend a couple of days there and hitch a ride with someone to the gathering.

I thought it was a pretty crazy plan. Where would we sleep? What if we couldn't get back to New York? What if we lost our jobs?

Deborah's only response was to put one of J's records on and turn the volume up. Oh, diary, I have never felt music under my skin like that before. It was like I was alone in the universe and nothing but sound was real.

So right now, I am on a bus that has left the city far behind us. Deborah is sitting beside me, her head pressed against the window as she sings softly to herself.

I am still not sure if this is a good idea, but I do know I have never felt more free.

Dear Diary,

It's so beautiful here! And so different to city life. I have never slept outdoors - part of me is scared of wild animals but Deborah says I shouldn't worry about that. She says the wild animals will be at the music fair, and then I can worry. I do think she was joking.

Everything feels magical. To have the grass under your feet and the wind in your hair is completely rejuvenating.

Deborah also bought a guitar before we left New York, and she played it by the fire and we both sang along. I didn't even know she could play, but she sounded wonderful. Actually, we sounded pretty great together, if I'm being honest.

Perhaps it doesn't matter if we lose our jobs. Maybe we will become rock stars, and be the ones to fly in our private jet, having our drinks served and our cigarettes lit.

Dear Diary,

Tomorrow we are going to head for the fair. We will hitch, we will walk if we have to, but we will get there. We must.

I'm not quite sure what will happen once we get there, but I know now that it's something my spirit has been crying out for.

I can't quite describe the way I feel. It's like I've been transported to another dimension, where everything is beautiful and the sun always shines.

I feel closer to the sky now than I ever did while flying.
