100 Day Returns

Meet the Muses

THE DREAM TEAM

When we first started thinking about what we wanted WonderLust to look like, we knew we would need a really stellar team for our shoot. Well, we found that – and then some – in photographer Carly and models Amelia and Christina. They were more than a dream team – they quickly became our muses for the entire concept.

We sat down with them to find out what makes these ladies the super cool people they are… and what’s sparking their WonderLust at the moment.

Where are you right now?

In Bali – laying in bed typing these answers at 4am (still stuck on Australia time)...

How did you get into fashion photography?

Hard work, a love for fashion and networking. I quit my job as an event manager in Sydney and moved to Byron Bay six years ago. I was chasing a bit more out of life than the 70 hour-a-week corporate suit job. I always had a passion to study and pursue photography. About four years ago now, I bit the bullet, decided not to study photography and bought my first SLR. I am self-taught. I started shooting and getting creative with the little spare time I had. I then started contributing images and creative stories to a local website, then started shooting gigs and events (epic for networking)... With a lot of pushing from my legend friends and fam, I decided to start a blog and just kept playing around and shooting... Eventually that led me to more collaborations with more established fashion brands and eventually I was too busy to work for anyone else – I scored a few jobs straight up which involved travel to Mexico and beyond for campaigns, so I was kinda forced into taking the plunge to being self employed and boy, I have never looked back... That was two years ago.

What do you feel it takes to make a success in the industry?

Be humble, hard-working, creative, flexible, love what you do and enjoy working in different creative teams and – pretty important – enjoy working with people. Be open-minded and perhaps a bit thick-skinned. Be prepared for epic locations, good times and adventures, BUT also be prepared for those early starts, late nights, long days shooting and long days in front of the Mac.

How was it working with the BlackMilk crew?

Super fun crew! Easy going! I wanna play again. Thanks to Matt for the appropriate tunes to keep us going and Alex for looking after us!

Where do you draw your inspiration from?

Travel – the people I meet, the places I go! Textures. Colours. The Ocean.

Whats on your Spotify?

My starred list is a combination of old classics to new club bangers, a lot of alternative too. Fleetwood Mac to Gary Clarke Junior to Rufus. I Shazam anything I love and it goes straight to my starred list. Loving Anna of the North, love a bit of a Chet, gah too many to say. I wake up and shower to my Spotify started lost on shuffle every morning.

How do you get into character for a shoot?

It's always fun when there is a story and personality behind a shoot that the team wants you to embody. Usually we look through reference images or films before we start shooting, then once we all have an understanding of the feeling and we get to the location and in outfits and make up it all flows pretty easily from there :) Music whilst shooting helps too!

How was it working with the BlackMilk crew?

Working with the BlackMilk crew was a really great experience. Such a lovely, talented group of people, beautiful locations and fun story to play out – jobs don't get much better than that!

What's your favourite memory from a music festival or gig you've been to?

I think my favourite gig memory has to be my first one, it was a Crystal Castles show at the Metro in Sydney and was such an interesting new experience when I was really young.

I also went to Subsonic festival this year, they build a pretty amazing setup of different stages and music in a beautiful valley on a river just a few hours out of Sydney. I can't wait to go back, it's such a special little weekend escape from reality.

What's on your Spotify?

I don't actually use Spotify but I go through phases of listening to a lot of different types of music, I'm currently making a playlist for my intergalactic birthday party this weekend so it's sounding very spacey!

What is your favourite thing about your profession?

I studied theatre at uni, so pretending and playing characters is something I love to do as a part of modelling. That, and meeting all kinds of different creatives from around the globe.

How was it working with the BlackMilk crew?

Absolutely terrible – hated every minute. No I'm kidding of course – it couldn't have been a better team. As soon as the crew picked me up from the airport I was instantly relaxed – there were no egos or idle chit-chat. We were silly (them), weird (me) and full of non-stop good stories.

What part of the world are you feeling wanderlust for right now?

I'm heading back to a place I grew up in a week – Fiji – so I'm excited for that...but wanderlusting? I definitely want to go completely off the grid and explore – somewhere like Chile or Madagascar.

What's on your Spotify?

Always the old stuff mixed in with a bit of new. Recently I was shown the artist Kishi Bashi – listen to 'I am the Antichrist to You' and you'll be taken away to a magical place.
