Virginia Frances Sterrett’s illustration, from the old French fairytale Ourson, shows the plight of the character Violette – a young girl who becomes lost while walking in the forest with her brother (who looks like a bear…it’s a long story, don’t ask). After spending the night in the forest, they eventually find their way home – only to fall victim to a house fire and the wrath of an evil fairy (who looks like a toad – again, it’s a long story). It’s a tough life, being a character in a 19th century French fairytale.
