Although landscapes were a common subject for Dutch artists of the mid-1800s, Paul Gabriel's works tended to stand out. While grey tones were dominant in the paintings of his contemporaries at the Hague School, Gabriel was liberal in his use of colour, because as he said 'our land is not grey, even when the weather is grey'. As a result, this summery scene of a windmill on the edge of a polder waterway is captured in all its bright, colourful glory.
This dress is totally frilling - er, thrilling, that is. The loose tank shape is punctuated by an adorable frill that is seriously flattering on everyone.
