The full name of Jan Toorop’s 19th century drawing is O Grave, Where Is Thy Victory?, and it references the idea that death offers freedom from earthly suffering. A body lies near an open grave, while two angelic figures work to free it from entwining thorny branches. Definitely creepy, but also sort of comforting.
