Details

The arrogance and subsequent fiery death of Phaeton, son of Apollo the sun god, is most famously recounted in Ovid's Metamorphoses written in 8 AD. In 1604 and 1605, Rubens immortalised the scene in one of his most vibrant, memorable masterpieces. Take a moment to let the historical significance of all of that sink in a little bit. Someone wrote a story. Then, fifteen hundred years later, someone else turned it into a painting. Now, in 2015, that story and that painting are still so well-loved and still resonate so strongly with people living and breathing right now that we want to wear it on our bodies. And that is what makes a masterpiece.
