This is one of only two definitively known artworks by artist Margaretha Haverman. She was the only female pupil of renowned Dutch artist Jan van Huysum, but he claimed that her father convinced him to take her on against his wishes, and that her work was simply copies of his own. In fact, she was accused of submitting her mentor’s work to gain entrance to a prestigious Parisian academy, and was expelled on that basis. Still, there is no doubt amongst art historians that this particular painting is her own work, and that it shows incredible still-life technique and skill comparable to that of the great van Huysum.
