Degas was fascinated by movement, and as a man of wealth and privilege he was a valued guest backstage at ballet rehearsals - giving him the perfect opportunity to study and capture movement at its finest.
In his later years, Degas' eyesight failed him and one of his final statements was "...one sees no longer except in memory." If paintings like Two Dancers on a Stage are any indication, Degas' memory was a pretty amazing place to be.
