In the late 16th century, Europe was in the grip of what was known as 'the little ice age'. Winters were incredibly, unbearably cold, and lasted much longer than usual. So it's no wonder that Hendrick Avercamp, who lived in The Netherlands at the time, painted multiple scenes depicting frozen landscapes, and the ways in which village life played out amidst such harsh conditions – in this case, embracing the fun of ice skating around the streets.
