Krampusnacht

Long before fairy lights and neatly wrapped presents took over December, the legend of Krampus was already moving through the winter shadows. His origins stretch back to pagan solstice traditions, where he was believed to be a horned creature connected to the darker side of the season. In some stories, he is even described as the child of Hel, the Norse goddess of the underworld. That makes him a kind of spooky holiday royalty, which feels very on brand for us.

Krampusnacht: The wild folklore behind our festive fiend

As Christianity spread across Europe, the Krampus story refused to disappear. Even when the church tried to ban him, communities held on to their winter monster. Over time he became linked with Saint Nicholas, creating one of the most memorable good-versus-chaos pairings in folklore.

The Night the Beast Roams

On the evening of December 5, known as Krampusnacht, both figures are said to appear. Saint Nicholas brings treats to the well behaved. Krampus takes care of the naughty list in a far more dramatic way. The tales speak of switches, bundles of branches and the threat of being carried off to places no one wants to visit. By the morning of December 6, children would wake to either gifts or a reminder to try a little harder next year.

The Chaos of the Krampuslauf

Modern celebrations keep that wild energy alive. Across Austria and Germany, people dress in huge horned costumes for the Krampuslauf. This is a lively parade where performers charge through the streets, startle onlookers and sometimes chase them for fun. The tradition grew rapidly from the late twentieth century as communities focused on preserving their folklore. From there, Krampus began turning up in festivals and films around the world, becoming a favourite for anyone who wants a darker, less sugary twist on the holiday season.
