François Boucher is a name that became totally synonymous with the excessively ornamental French Rococo style. Alongside his portraiture and works depicting family life, he was known for painting passionate scenes of mythological figures and angels, including this scene from Ovid's Metamorphoses depicting the abduction of Europa by the god Jupiter.
