Botticelli’s Primavera is one of the most controversial paintings in the world. Why? Because it includes a number of figures from classical mythology, all together in a garden, and no one can quite figure out why Botticelli put them there. Unlike the artist’s most famous work, The Birth Of Venus, there is no known story that brings these particular figures together, and no interpretation that fits the usual classical symbology. The most accepted interpretation is that the painting acts as an allegory for the coming of spring – hence its now-accepted name of Primavera.
