One of English painter John William Waterhouse’s most famous works, The Lady Of Shalott is based on an 1832 poem of the same name by Alfred, Lord Tennyson. Cursed to confinement in a tower and forbidden to look outside unless in a reflection, the painting depicts the moment the Lady escapes in a boat, determined to face her destiny.
