This sixth, and most elaborate, in a series of 16th-century tapestries has inspired much debate over its intended meaning. While each of the previous tapestries – all of which portray a lady, a unicorn and a lion – can be clearly interpreted as depicting each of the five senses in turn, the sixth is much more obscure. Some art historians believe that it references a sixth sense, while others describe it as a symbol of the differences between human and animal desires. The enduring mystery, as well as the general fineness of the work, has made the tapestry one of the most iconic and important artworks of the Middle Ages.
